GUTTENBEG: Rudolph Wolter, pioneer resident and businessman of Guttenberg, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Katherine Gilbertz, in Guttenberg Sunday morning at 6:30 o'clock, at the age of 92 years, seven months and nine days, following a several weeks' illness. The cause of his death was mostly due to the infirmities of old age. Mr. Wolter was born in Schlossgraf-Hatzfeld, in Bonn on the Rhine, Germany, June 08, 1844, where he grew to young manhood and received his early education. When a young man he served an apprenticeship in Germany, learning the trade of a brewmaster, which occupation he followed successfully for many years. In March, 1866, he came to America, Settling in Cincinnati, Ohio, for two years, during which time he was employed at his trade there. In April, 1868, he came to Guttenberg to make his home, where the remainder of his ambitious business life was spent.
On June 12, 1871, he was married at Guttenberg to Miss Katherine Biederman, who preceded him in death Feb. 13, 1906. After their marriage the couple settled on a farm near Guttenberg, where they resided for some time, Mr. Wolter specializing in the growing of hops. After leaving the farm, the family returned to Guttenberg, where Mr. Wolter successfully operated and owned Wolter Brewery and the Wolter Bottling Works for many years. He also was a member of the business firm, Wolter & Biederman, proprietors of a meat market here. Since the death of his wife, he had been making his home with his children. He retired from active business life a number of years ago.
Two sons and a daughter have also preceded the father in death. His death is deeply mourned by three daughters, Mrs. Katherine Gilbertz and Mrs. Anna Schmid, of Guttenberg, and Mrs. Alphonse Wagner, of McCammon, Idaho; three sons, Joseph and John Wolter, of Guttenberg, and Charles Wolter of Detroit, Mich.; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one step-sister, in Germany, and numerous other relatives and friends by whom he will be sadly missed. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J. A. Dupont at St. Mary's Catholic church here Tuesday morning at 9:00 o'clock, with interment in Mt. Olivet cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near.
