VOLGA: Mattie A. Hoyt was born in Volga, Iowa, on April 26, 1853, and passed to her reward November 12, 1936, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. W. Luce, of Evanston, Ill. She was 83 years of age.
She was the daughter of James Grey and Betsy Whitford. Of one sister, and five brothers, only one survives, Henry Whitford, of Volga.
Mattie began teaching school at 17 years of age, taught eight years, then married. Later she resumed teaching, her last school being taught at the age of 70.
In 1878, she married John Addison Hoyt, whereupon they moved to South Hero, Vt., on the shores of Lake Champlain, returning to Iowa three years later. to them were born three children, Hardy, who died at the age of 18 months; Prua Adel, who preceded her mother in death in March, 1831, and Mrs. Bessie E. Luce of Evanston, Ill. In 1899 her husband died.
Mrs. Hoyt's body was brought here for burial Monday.
Funeral services were held at two o'clock at the Methodist church Monday afternoon. A former pastor, Rev. A. B. Chamberlain, of Clarence, Iowa, officiated at the church and at the Hill Crest cemetery, where interment was made.
