Clayton County Register, 28 Oct. 1936.

Ralph Chettinger died Saturday morning, Oct. 24 at 8:45. He had suffered a paralytic stroke on Sept. 11th while fishing with a party of friends. For a time it was thought he would recover but after a second stroke he weakened steadily and death finally overtook him at the age of 53 years, six months and one day.

Ralph Hubbard Chettinger was born at Garnavillo on April 23, 1883, the oldest son of John and Elizabeth (Karp) Chettinger. While still a small child, his parents moved to Bloomington, Wis., where they remained for 15 years, after which they returned to Iowa settling on a farm near Ceres. In July, 1907, in company with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. John Hagensick, he left for North Dakota to settle on a claim. They drove a wagon and team over the prairie for 80 miles to build a home of sod, which he visited just previous to his death.

He reurned to Iowa three years later and was married to Martha Klahr at Mederville on April 06, 1910. To this union three children were born.

They lived on a farm in this county for nine years but on Mar. 01, 1920, moved to Grant county, in Wisconsin, where they remained for another nine years. Never being satisfied to be away from his brothers and sisters, he returned to Iowa, to remain until his death.

He was a kind and loving husband and father with his first thought always of his family. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen and the Royal Neighbors.

Those left to mourn his death are his wife and three children, namely: Gladys (Mrs. Robert Hedeman) of Alpha; Gerald of Edgewood and Ray at home; one grandson, Gerald LaVerne Chettinger, two brothers, Roy of Manchester and George of Garber; three sisters, Mrs. Inez Scott of Edgewood, Mrs. Walda Keehner of Guttenberg, and Mrs. George Auer of Garnavillo, also many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held from the home at Strawberry Point on Monday at one o'clock and at the Friedens Evangelical church here at two o'clock with burial in the Garnavillo cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer of this place officiating.
