Clayton County Register, 28 Oct. 1936.
Leopoldie Eberhart, the widow of Peter Eberhart, died at her home here last Monday, Oct. 19th, of old age after an illness of one month.
Mrs. Eberhart was born Nov. 25, 1844, in Bohemia and came to this country, with her mother, in the year 1856, settling in this county near Elkport. About 40 years ago she moved, with her family, to Elkader and this has been her home ever since.
At the age of sixteen years she was united in marriage to Peter Eberhart at Elkport. Her husband preceded her in death in the year 1899. Seven children were born to this union of whom four - two sons and two daughters - survive the mother who would have reached the age of 92 years had she lived five weeks longer. The surviving children are: Mrs. Lena Ernst and A. Eberhart, Elkader; Mrs. Matilda Meyer, Sentinel Butte, Mont., and Frank Eberhart, of Prairie du Sac, Wis. Besides these there are six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
The deceased received her education in Bohemia and after her marriage resided on a farm near Elkport. Some years after removing to Elkader she established a greenhouse and florist shop here and this she conducted as long as her health permitted after which her daughter, Mrs. Ernst, conducted the same.
Mrs. Eberhart was a home-loving woman and her family meant more to her than anything else. She found her greatest joy surrounded by her children and her many, many flowers which she cultivated, more for their beauty and the joy they gave others, than for the revenue she derived from them.
From early morning until after dusk, in seasonable weather, Mrs. Eberhart could be found, day after day, working in her garden. When weather did not permit she would busy herself in the greenhouses. But in spite of all this work she found time to do her housework, her family was always ready to chat when a neighbor or old friend came to call on her. These old friends, of whom there are only a few now, will miss her equally as much as her immediate family.
Funeral services were held on Thursday forenoon in St. Joseph's church and burial was made in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. Fr. Sharphoff of Garnavillo officiating. Casket bearers were: Henry Benschneider, Wm. Allen, Dr. J. P. Donlon, E. A. Burlingame, Thos. Donahue and Dan Barton.
Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Eggerth and son, Earnest, and family of Renwick, Iowa; Mrs. Stanmeyer and Mrs. Laux of Chicago; Mrs. Josephine Mickle of North Dakota; Mrs. Notestein of Austin, Minn., and Mrs. Alex Matt and son of Elkport.
