Clayton County Register, 16 Sept. 1936.
James T. Adams, who died Sunday morning, September 13, at 5:30 in the home of Miss Minnie Hauschen, was born February 21, 1853, in Brooks county, West Virginia, near Wheeling. At the age of 15 months he came with his parents and two older brothers to Clayton county. When they reached the river at Prairie du Chien the way was blocked and his mother carried him across the frozen river on her back.
They settled near Farmersburg on a farm. Later the deceased moved to Farmersburg where he was engaged, for 35 years, in the insurance business, which work he kept until shortly before the time of his death.
Mr. Adams was a member of the Masonic lodge. At the time of his death he had the honor of being the oldest member of the Farmersburg lodge. He was also a charter member of the same chapter.
Mr. Adams was aways interested in the church, giving it his support financially and his presence in service when he was able to do so.
His death was not a surprise to most of his friends as he had been in failing health almost a year. The years had taken their toll upon his body and death came as a natural wearing out of the body's machinery. He seemed to sense that the end was near and he was peacefully waiting to go, showing no signs of emotion and saying very little to anyone as he faced the release which the Grim Reaper will give to each one of us.
He will be missed in Farmersburg. He loved Farmersburg. During his illness in the hospital at Prairie du Chien in a letter to his brother he said: "I would rather reach the end of the road among my friends, therefore I want to go back to Farmersburg." He had few enemies. He was always honest in business, kind-hearted and the passing of the years brought to him a mellowness that all shall miss.
He leaves to mourn his death one brother Elzie W. Adams of Milwaukee and a host of friends, especially in and around Farmersburg.
Funeral services Tuesday afternoon in the M.E. church were conducted by Rev. Melcher of Giard. Burial was made in the Farmersburg and Wagner cemetery.
