Clayton County Register, 05 Aug. 1936.

Joseph Lathrop, 23, assistant manager of the state liquor store at Strawberry Point, was drowned in the Maquoketa river near the forrestville dam at Backbone state park about 2 a.m. Sunday, when the boat in which he was riding with Roy Shriver, manager of the Strawberry Point liquor store, overturned. The two men had gone to the dam about midnight.

Lathrop was unable to swim and his body sank to the bottom despite efforts by Shriver to save him. The latter barely managed to reach shore after his rescue efforts had failed. Shriver sought help at Dundee, and Sheriff Harry Utley and Alfred Fischer, Manchester, went to the dam with grappling hooks.

Lathrop's body was found in about eight feet of water at 6:30 a.m. Sunday. There will be no inquest.

Lathrop is survived by his wife, a daughter, Jolene, 2, his father, Lloyd Lathrop, of Strawberry Point, a sister, Mrs. Cora Deneke, of Cedar Rapids, and a brother, Howard, of Thompson.
