Guttenberg: Funeral services for Mrs. Christian Herchert (nee Elizabeth Baade), were conducted by the Rev. W. J. F. Adix at St. John's American Lutheran church in Guttenberg on Friday afternoon, with burial in the City cemetery. The funeral was largely attended. Mrs. Herchert passed away at her home here Tuesday evening of last week at 7:45 o'clock, after a several hours' illness. The cause of her death was apoplexy. She was born in Baden, Germany, on December 11, 1853, and reached the age of 82 years, five months and one day at the time of her death. When five years of age she came to America with her parents, settling in Garnavillo township, Clayton county, Iowa. Sixty-three years ago she was married to Mr. Christian Herchert, who preceded her in death on December 05, 1935. After their marriage the couple resided on a farm in Garnavillo township for a number of years, then went to Garnavillo to make their home. The family also resided at Ossian for a time. Sixteen years ago the family came to Guttenberg and here the deceased spent the remainder of her life. Mrs. Herchert was one of Clayton county's pioneer residents. Her death is deeply mourned by three daughters: Mrs. Gustave Reinitz and Mrs. Alma Siege of Guttenberg, and Mrs. August Kraus of Garnavillo; two sons, Edward and Arnold Herchert, both of Guttenberg; nine grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
