He received his education in the local public school and graduated in 1913. Later he graduated from forestry at Ames and took a business course in the Upper Iowa University at Fayette. He enlisted in the U.S. Army 829 Aero Squadron in November 1916, and remained 22 months overseas in France. He received his honorable discharge shortly after the armistice was signed. On his return home, he was employed for a time in the Franklin Furniture store and later in the Arnold garage. He was united in marriage to Lillian Brown of Colesburg on July 14, 1931. Following the marriage they went to Cedar Rapids to make their home. Being an expert machinist, he was employed for a time by the La Plant-Choate company. For two years he has been employed in government service, and for the past three months was a postal clerk.
Following a weeks' illness from pneumonia and intestinal flu, he was taken to St. Luke's hospital last Friday, and died Sunday night at 10:45. His father, one brother, Morris Hesner, and one sister, Mrs. Nellie Alderson, have preceded him in death. Surviving are his wife and son, Harold Duane, three years old; his aged mother, two brothers, Major George Hesner, now stationed at Fort Benning, Ga., and Claire Hesner of Independence; three sisters, Mrs. Carl (Lillie) Gamm of Sumner, Mrs. M. J. (Vera) Martin of Volga, and Mrs. Freda Eckhart of Cedar Rapids.
(Note: His entry on the WPA record shows his death year in error, as this obit is definitely from a 1936 edition of the newspaper, as shown.)
