Clayton County Register, 22 Apr. 1936.

Another highly respected pioneer Christian citizen of this community is called to her reward., in the passing of Mrs. Amelia Witt.

Mrs. Amelia Witt was the daughter of John Krieg and his wife, Christine, nee Kiesling. The deceased was born October 08, 1855, in Elk township, Clayton county, and died at her home here in Elkader, in which she had lived the last 46 years, on Thursday afternoon, April 16. Mrs. Witt reached the age of 80 years, six months and eight days.

The deceased spent her entire life in this community. In the year 1878, on the 21st day of December, at Clayton Center, she was united in marriage to Wm. Ernst Witt, who preceded her in death in the year 1928. Four children were born to this union. One son, Otto, died in the year 1918. The three surviving children are: George M. Witt of East Chicago, Ind., Mrs. Alta Busching and Wm. J. Witt of Elkader.

Mrs. Witt will be missed by the entire community and especially by those who are called upon to spend the most of their time within their homes on account of some affliction. Mrs. Witt was forever calling on the sick and in word and deed trying to make their burden lighter.

Needless, almost, to mention her loving care for those within her home and her immediate relatives. She gave her all for her home as God would have it. Although enjoying good health for the greater part of her life herself, much sickness found its way into her home., but her loving hands and heart were equal to the task. She truly possessed the pioneer spirit.

As she advanced in age and came to that place in life where one lives on the memories of the past more than the present, she rejoiced in telling her grandchildren of the time of her childhood, when she, with her father, would drive to Guttenberg with a team of oxen or how all work on the farm was done with the oxen instead of the horse or tractor as today.

The song of her choice was, "Abide with Me, Fast Falls the Eventide," and it is this choice that made her life beautiful, helped her to face the trials of life and the suffering during her last illness, and leave her loved ones in the hour of death an abiding joy.

She was a charter member of Frieden's Evangelical church and also the Frauen Verein. She was ever active and present for all the services of her church. While confined from October to the hour of her death to her home she missed her visits to the House of God and often spoke of this longing. She was always outspoken as to her faith in Christ and her desire that others might follow Him too.

Besides the before-named children, she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Roach of Eagle Grove, Iowa; Mrs. Rose Masters of Dubuque; two brothers, Gustav Krieg of Edgewood and William Krieg of DeWitt, Iowa; also six grandchildren and a very large circle of friends.

Services were held last Saturday from the home at 1:30 and the Frieden's Evangelical church at two o'clock. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery, The Rev. P. Kitterer officiating. Casket-bearers were: George Hochhaus, Arthur Hochhaus, Henry Reinhardt, Milton Uecker, Richard Busching and Wm. E. Witt.
