Clayton County Register, 19 Feb. 1936.
Friends learned last Saturday, February 8, that Otto Bartels, well known young farmer living north of St. Sebald's church, had died. Otto had been ill for several years and recently held a sale, expecting to give up farm work. He was a good farmer and a fine young man.
Otto Henry August Bartels was born the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. August Bartles on August 08, 1993, in the St. Sebald settlement. His parents, members of the Lutheran congregation of St. Sebald saw to it that their son was baptized in infancy and thereby received into the childhood of the triune God. He was also sent to catechetical instruction. On March 24, 1907, he conferred his faith and was confirmed. Growing up into manhood in this vicinity he tenanted one of his parents' farms. On October 10, 1928, he was united in marriage with Miss Ruth Charlotte McCrea, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McCrea of Arlington. This union was blessed with two children, a daughter and a son.
The deceased had been ill for the past five years and his weak condition in the last year made it imperative for him to give up farming, and, if possible, to take up some easier work. However, before these plans were carried out, God in His Providence had other plans. He called him away from this life into life eternal last Saturday in the morning about 7:00 o'clock, at an age of 42 years and six months.
Those that mourn his untimely departure are his bereaved wife and two children, Dorothy Ruth at the age of six years and Raymond Otto at only seven months; also his aged parents, who stayed with him and his family the last years. There is also one sister, Mrs. Laura Frederick of Strawberry Point, and one brother, Elmer, and besides these, numerous other friends and relatives.
Drifted roads were opened and the body taken to St. Sebald church Wednesday where funeral services were conducted by Rev. M. O. Jahr, pastor of Emmanuel's Lutheran church of Strawberry Point. The pallbearers were John Hack, Jr., James Brink, Henry Probst, Edward Larson, L. J. Tenney, and Carl Huebsch. Burial was made in the St. Sebald cemetery.
The relatives and many friends sympathize deeply with the sorrowing ones in the loss of a worthy and beloved husband, father and son.
