John Cornal Coates was born on January 28, 1853, in New York, the son of Mary Sutton Coates and William Coates. Mr. Coates' health has been failing lately and he passed away Dec. 27th, at the age of 82 years, ten months and 29 days. He leaves to mourn his departure one sister, Mrs. Wm. Briggs of Dubuque; two brothers, Joe of Akron, Ohio, and Robert of California. For many years he made his home with brothers and sister at St. Olaf. His later years were spent on the Jacob Larson farm. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, Dec. 29th, at the chapel. Burial was made at the Farmersburg cemetery. Rev. S. J. Strandjord officiated. Those who attended from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Briggs, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Briggs, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Briggs and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Heitzman, all of Dubuque. The pallbearers were Fred Orvis, Oscar Glesne, E. Aarvig, Ben Fuelling, Henry Kjosa and Arthur Knuth.
