Mary Content Steward, daughter of Thomas and Mary Stroud, was born in Indiana, January 27th, 1840, and while a small babe her people moved to Erie, Pa. After a few years they moved from there to the State of Wisconsin, and here she lived for many years. At Lime Ridge, Wis., March 18th, 1858, she was united in marriage to James C. Steward. To this union there were born eight children, the two older children, Esta and Orin, having reached maturity and passed away, also Myrtle, the youngest child, at the age of a few months. Five children, George Steward and Mrs. Flora Tracy, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, Lawrence Steward, of Belvidere, Ill.; Mrs. Mary Tracy, of Littleport; and Mrs. Hattie Livingstone, of Hopkinton, live to mourn the death of this dear mother. She is also survived by one sister and two brothers. She and her husband moved from Wisconsin to Strawberry Point in June 1875, and had always made this their home. Her husband passed away March 01st, 1908. Mrs. Steward had poor health for several years, but for the past few years had become very strong, keen and active for one of her years. She was in good health and enjoying life to the fullest with her family and many friends up to the time of the accident at Anamosa that caused her death Sept. 27, 1912. Funeral services were held from the Methodist Episcopal Church in Strawberry Point, Rev. O. M. vanSwearingen of the Congregational church conducting the service.
