Maria Eleonora Venus was born Oct. 31, 1844, in Friedberg, Germany. With her parents she came to this country when five years old. In 1862 she was united in marriage with Edward Kraft, who lost his life in the Civil War in the fall of 1864. One child was born to this union, Mrs. Emelie Siebertz, who died in Garnavillo in the early spring of this year.
Three years later the widow was married to George Meyer, to whom she was a faithful companion for forty-five years. Seven children were born to them, of which one boy, Louis, died in infancy and a married daughter, Mrs. Lulu Elstead, in 1901.
For some time Mrs. Meyer suffered from a complication of diseases until death relieved her from all sufferings on Friday morning, Sept. 27th, at the age of 67 years, 10 months and 26 days. Her departure is mourned by the husband, George Meyer, and the children, Joe, Max, Edward, Mrs. Augusta Vogel, of Minnesota, and Mrs. Leonora Beckmann of Littleport, Iowa. She also leaves eight grandchildren, and three sisters, viz: Mrs. Emma Ruegnitz, of Davenport; Mrs. Henry Luers, and Mrs. Frank Liers, from Clayton, and a number of other relatives and friends.
Sunday afternoon at one o'clock the funeral services were held at the German church, conducted by Rev. Franke, interment at the East Side cemetery.
