Elkader Register, Thur., 21 Mar. 1912.

Another one of Clayton county's pioneer settlers has answered the final summons of his maker. This morning at 8:30, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. W. Wilke, of this place, occurred the death of Christian Gossmann, aged 90 years, 4 months and 24 days. He had been confined to his bed for about a week but had been a sufferer from Bright's disease for some time.

Christian Gossmann was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, Oct. 27th, 1821, and was educated in the schools of his native land, where he also learned the trade of ship-carpenter. In 1851 he came to America, locating in Guttenberg, in this county, and on Aug. 26th, he was married to Miss Sophia Hamann. He worked at the carpenter trade in Guttenberg and later in Garnavillo for about two years, after which he located on a farm in Read township. In 1893 with his family he moved to a farm near Communia, now occupied by his son Fred. There in 1901 he and his devoted wife were fortunate enough to enjoy the celebration of their golden wedding, assisted by their children, their grandchildren and many neighbors and friends. July 25th, 1903, his beloved companion died and the following year he came to Elkader and has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. H. W. Wilke.

Seven children came to crown his life and now miss his kindly presence. They are Mrs. Anna Wilke, and Henry Gossmann, of Elkader; Christian, of Lester, Lyon Co., Iowa; Fred, of Communia; John, of Pierre, S.D.; Louis F., of Northfield, Minn., and William, of Sioux City, Iowa. There are also twenty-six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Mr. Gossmann was honest and industrious, a citizen of an excellent type. Of a genial and social disposition he enjoyed the companionship of his friends and he made warm friends of all with whom he came in contact. While most of his intimate friends of earlier days have preceded him to the great beyond, there are still many who will miss him and sympathize with his bereaved family.

The funeral will be held in the German church at this place next Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, with Rev. Franke officiating. Bural will be in the East Side cemetery.
