Elkader Register, Thur., 14 Mar. 1912. Elkport and Vicinity column.
Johannah Murphy's sudden death on Sunday afternoon, caused profound sorrow in the hearts of her relatives and the entire community. Deceased was born in Volga township about 48 years ago. She was a true lover of home, for she left it only to attend to her religious duties and do her trading. The past winter she was not so well as usual and was therefore more at home than before. To her there was "No place like Home."
She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Murphy, Sr., both of whom preceded her in death, the former dying about 20 years ago and the mother following about 1 1/2 years later. A little sister, who was bitten by a snake, also died several years ago, another sister, Mrs. M. O'Day, was called away about 20 years ago, so there was left only one brother and it was on the old homestead, a little less than one mile from Elkport, that the sister and brother spent the long years together. The old neighbors could have but the kindest regards and good will for her, for she loved to have children visit them. She was a good woman. She leaves to mourn her death, her brother, John Murphy, on the homestead as the only survivor of the family. It is he who will most miss her, for she was always there to do those many acts which a loving sister can do. A brother-in-law, Mr. O'Day, of Littleport, with his two sons, Mike and John, were at the funeral, also Maggie O'Day, who lived with them for nine years after the death of their mother. She was cared for by the Aunt and Uncle as if she were their own child. Another niece, Mrs. Mary Emerson, and her husband, L. Emerson, of Strawberry Point, were in attendance. From the house the procession wended its way to town and there was enlarged by many more, who wished to escort the remains to its last resting place. Rev. Minogue officiated.
The floral offerings were beautiful. The entire community sympathizes with the bereaved brother. The pall-bearers were: P. W. Conley, C. Putz, M. Costigan, S. Eggerth, C. D. Beck and Geo. Seward.
