Elkader Register, Thur., 14 Mar. 1912.

The death of Miss Mae C. Hodges, a former Elkader girl, occurred Sunday, March 10th, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Sara Van Brocklin, at Verdigris, Neb., the end of five months hopeless struggle against that dread disease cancer.

Miss Hodges was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, Nov. 30th, 1870, and about two years later came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Hodges to Clayton, where she grew to young womanhood, and became a successful teacher. Her mother died in 1885 and in 1889 the family moved to Elkader. Miss Hodges was at home the most of the time that the family remained here and greatly endeared herself to a wide circle of friends. In 1897 Mr. Hodges and his family moved to Neola, Iowa, remaining there about five years, then locating in Des Moines for a time and later locating on claims near Belleplaine, S.D. Here just two years ago Mr. Hodges died. During these years Miss Hodges had endeavored to fill as far as possible the place made vacant by the death of her mother. A part of the time while she was securing title to her claim in South Dakota she taught in the schools near by.

Last October she went to Deadwood, S.D., in the hope that an operation might benefit her health but it was discovered that the disease had become to firmly established and after some weeks in the hospital she was taken to the home of her sister, Mrs. Van Brocklin, in Nebraska. Here she patiently waited the summons of her Creator. Her patience, her courage, her fortitude, can only be understood by those who knew her high character and her firm faith in her Redeemer. Her death was untimely, but she had not lived in vain. For years her life was a record of service for those she loved and for all whom she could aid.

Of her immediate family, two sisters, Mrs. Sara Van Brocklin, of Verdigris, Neb., and Miss Louise Hodges, and one brother, Leroy Hodges, of Newell, S.D., are left to mourn the loss of their beloved sister, but a large number of friends, in every locality where Miss Hodges had made her home, will sorrow with them.

Her remains were brought here Tuesday and the funeral services were held in St. Joseph's church Wednesday morning, conducted by her former pastor, Rev. J. F. Reilly. Interment was in St. Joseph's cemetery at this place. Those present from abroad were: Miss Louise Hodges, of Newell, S.D., Miss Rebecca McKnight, of Dubuque; Messrs. Gill and Vernenil De Lorimer, of Prairie du Chien; Miss Nellie Murphy, of Waterloo; Miss Mary Crefeld, of Clayton, and Mr. Chas. Engler, of Garnavillo.
