Chris Maker, 90, who as a youth of 16 years enlisted in the Union army at the outbreak of the Civil war and served the four years of the war, died at his home, 830 Rhomberg avenue, Wednesday morning at 4 o'clock. He was in poor health for the past two years, never having fully recovered from a serious illness suffered at that time. His death reduces to seven the number of veterans of Grant's army still living in Dubuque.

The body is at the Egelhof Home for Funerals, where services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. H.H. Diers, pastor of St. Matthew's Lutheran church, will officiate. Burial in Linwood cemetery will be in charge of Hyde Clark post, Grand Army of the Republic. Members of the Hyde Clark Women's Relief Corps will conduct services at the funeral home Thursday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, and an hour later services will be conducted by Mary Agard Tent, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

Mr. Maker was in this country only four years when he left his home in Galena and walked to Platteville, where he enlisted in Company C of the Forty-Third Wisconsin infantry. He was born May 10, 1845, in Saxony, Germany, and came to this country when 12 years old with members of his family, who settled at Galena. He took part in many of the principal engagements of the Civil war and was wounded in one of the battles.

Most of his life after the close of the war was spent on a farm in Clayton county. He lived in Dubuque since his retirement 36 years ago.

He was married Oct. 5, 1889, to Miss Anna Claus. Surviving with his widow are his daughters, Mrs. Charles Radloff and Mrs. George Franz, of McGregor, and Mrs. Sam Blumer, Chicago; one son, Charles Maker, Chicago; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Henry Bunker, Monona, Ia., and his brother, Ernest Maker, Dubuque. One son, Christian, preceded him in death.
