Elkader Register, Thur., 21 July 1887. From the McGregor Times, undated.
Hans Allen and his boy Henry, residing on the Sni Magill, were last week engaged in drilling a well on Keiser's farm, some distance from home. Friday evening the boy complained of a severe headache, and his father told him to take a horse and ride home. Saturday evening about five Allen and his help quit work and started for home. When about half way home they discovered the horse which Henry rode, tied to a tree by the roadside, and close by found the boy's hat. A search was had, resulting in finding Henry close by the creek, with one foot in the water; his clothes were partially wet, showing that he had undoubtedly waded into the water. He was alive, but unable to give an account of the twenty-four hours experience he had since leaving his father. Henry was taken home, when medical aid was secured, and every attention given, but all to no effect. At midnight death claimed him as its own. Henry was 13 years of age, a promising young man. The funeral occurred on Tuesday, and was largely attended. When found the feet and hands were cold, and the terrible fever in full force. = McGregor Times.
