Elkader Register, Thur., 04 Mar. 1886.
At his home in Cox Creek township, on Tuesday morning, March 2nd, occurred the death of Samuel Hines, one of the pioneers of Clayton county. Mr. H., had been sick for a year past, and his death was not unexpected, but is no less a severe blow to the loved ones about him.
The subject of this short sketch was born in Virginia, we believe, in September, 1808, being, therefore, a little over 78 years of age. He was a blacksmith by trade, and worked at it for some time before coming to Iowa. At an early day he settled in Cass township, being the third white man to locate in Clayton County. He resided in Cass township for about five years, and then removed to Cox Creek township, taking up the first farm and making the first road in that township. Here he resided continuously until the day of his death. He leaves a large family of grown children, and we believe an aged wife to mourn his death.
May he rest in peace.
