GARNAVILLO: Gottlieb Martin Keehner was born at Waverly, O., Feb. 02, 1859, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Keehner. He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Leona Beckett, near McGregor, on the evening of Dec. 01, 1931, after attaining an age of 72 years, 10 months and 01 day.
In his early youth he moved, with his parents, to Potosi, Wis., and came to Iowa in 1883.
On August 31, 1883, he was united with Miss Katherine Thompson. Six children were born to this pair. After spending the first three years of their married life in Dubuque, they resided in and around Garnavillo since that time, with the exception of a few months, which they spent in Canada. Mr. Keehner worked several farms in this immediate neighborhood, and for a few years owned and operated the local hotel and restaurant. During the past 10 or 12 years Mr. Keehner has lived in Garnavillo with his wife. His health began to fail about a year ago, and finally culminated in his death.
The survivors are: four daughters, Mrs. Amanda Seeketz, Vesper, Wis.; Mrs. Leona Beckett, McGregor; Mrs. Amelda Schulte, Garnavillo; Mrs. Lucy Farrell, Los Angeles, Calif.; two sons, Waldemar, Guttenberg; and Verni, Monona; 21 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Charles Oswalt, Dubuque; a brother, Frank, Potosi, Wis. Two brothers and a sister preceded Mr. Keehner in death. There are also two step-sisters, Mrs. Louise Ward, Dubuque, and Mrs. Anna Ward, Detroit, Mich., and two step-brothers, Leo and Adolf, both of Dubuque.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran church, Garnavillo, on Friday afternoon, Dec. 04th, at 2:00 o'clock, the Rev. M. J. Harder officiating. Interment was made at the new Garnavillo cemetery.
