Herman Ahrens, 59, a prominent farmer of Read Township, took his own life late Sunday afternoon, when he shot himself with a revolver in a fit of despondency.
Ahrens lived for about two hours after his rash act, but finally passed away about six o'clock. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon and interment was made in the cemetery at Garnavillo.

Herman Ahrens passed away at his home in Read township last o'clock.
Deceased was born in Read township, this county, on January 23, 1872, and thus at the time of death had reached the age of 59 years, seven months and 20 days. His first wife, nee Elizabeth Gavey, preceded him in death about two years ago. This union was blessed with one son Melvin.
For thirty-five years deceased had followed farming as an occupation and all his life had been spent in this county.
Besides the widow, Mrs. Emma Hageman Ahrens, he is survived by one son Melvin, and four sisters, Marie and Anna Ahrens and Mrs. Ida Gruetzmacher of Garnavillo and Mrs. Fred Brase of Osterdock.
Funeral services were held at the late home yesterday afternoon and from the local Evangelical church and interment was made in the cemetery at Garnavillo, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.
