Clayton County Register, Thur., 20 Aug. 1931. St. Olaf column.

Esten Landsgaard was born Dec. 26, 1853, at Nore Prestegjald Numedal, Norway, of parents Esten Evanson Landsgaard and Helga Gunderson Landsgaard, and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith there. He died Aug. 07, 1931, at his home in Gunder, Iowa, reaching the age of 77 years, seven months and twelve days. He came to America as a young man and went to Walsh county, North Dakota, and proved a homestead, and later came to Iowa. On the 24th of February, 1887, he was united in marriage to Sarah Gisleson at the Marion Lutheran church. Then he bought the farm in Marion township, now occupied by his son Arthur. Here they lived for 33 years. In 1919 they bought the Tom Holm place in Gunder and moved there, where they have resided since. To this union were born seven children, two of which preceded him in death, namely Oscar, at the age of 16, and Arthur, seven months.

He leaves to mourn his loss his widow and five children, Harold, George, and Arthur of this vicinity, Mrs. Oscar Lindley of Osage, and Mrs. Arthur Christianson of Waukon. He also leaves eight grandchildren, besides a host of relatives and friends. He was an active and faithful member of the Marion church for more than 44 years. He was highly respected and always tried to do what was right. In his younger days he was active in community work and always had the welfare of the community at heart. He was always cheerful and met everybody with a smiling face. even to his last.

He died in the faith of his Lord. His last words were: "I am going home to my God." May we meet in heaven. Blessed be his memory.

Funeral services were held at the Marion church Monday, Aug. 10, 1931. Interment was made in the cemetery nearby, Rev. Strandjord officiating.
