Clayton County Register, Thur., 13 Aug. 1931.
Lydia Bente died at her home near Communia Monday, August 10, at the age of 83 years, four months and five days. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Beeh and was born in Baden, Germany, April 5, 1848.
She came to this country while still a child and settled with her parents in Volga township. She was united in marriage with Mike Bente in 1869. To this union one child - Wm. G. Bente of Mederville - was born. Her husband lost his life while digging a well on a place adjoining the home farm and July 06, 1874, she was married to Louis Bente, brother of Mike. To this union four children were born, namely: John of Edgewood, Sam residing on a farm adjoining the home farm, Ernest, and Louis. Ernest preceded his mother in death December, 1930, and Louis died in infancy.
May 17th, this year, the husband and father was taken by death. Mrs. Bente had a rugged constitution and always had enjoyed good health. By hard work and wise economy the departed was in a position that she could and perhaps should have retired from active farm life years ago, to spend her (next few words blurred) ease. But that was not her disposition. She found enjoyment in work and therefore kept it up until forced to slow up. During the past few months she failed visibly and nothing was left undone to give her comfort and relief until death put her beyond human care.
Besides her children she is survived by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, other relatives and many old time friends and neighbors. She was a loving mother and an ever obliging friend and neighbor.
The stars are bright -
But not so bright
As the light in a mother's eyes.
The flowers are sweet -
But not so sweet,
As a mother's happy sighs.
Pleasure is kind -
But not so kind
As a touch of a mother's hand.
The perfect thing,
The magic thing,
That a child can understand.Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at two o'clock and interment was made in the Communia cemetery, the Rev. C. H. Franke of Elkader officiating.
