Clayton County Register, Thur., 30 Jul 1931.
Rollin Seifert, 27, an employee of the Elkader Lumber Co., had gone to Pony Ceek near the Chas. Gottschalk farm in Boardman township, about three and a half miles east of town, in company with Mrs. Seifert, Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Huggins and sons and Mrs. C. L. Lamb and two children, to swim in the creek at that place about 7:30 p.m., Monday.
While the creek is not wide at this point there are several holes of some depth in it. One of Mrs. Lamb's sons had jumped into the creek and started to swim, being the first to enter the water.
Rollin was the second to enter the water, jumping from the bank and apparently into a hole, for he started to paddle frantically at once. He sank and immediate efforts were made to rescue him by his companions. Their efforts, however, were futile and the body sank to the bottom.
Help was summoned from threshers who were working nearby and in ten or fifteen minutes the body was recovered. Artificial respiration was resorted to as soon as the body was recovered and for a while hopes were entertained for Rollin's recovery, but these hopes soon dimmed and upon arrival of physicians it was determined that his life had passed out.
Rollin is survived by his widow, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Seifert, Clayton Center; two brothers, Harold and Karl Seifert. Funeral services will be held today in Clayton Center and interment will be made in the Clayton Center cemetery, the Rev. B. Korte officiating.
Rollin has been a trusted employee of the local lumber company, of which Pearl Huggins is the manager, and since his residence here in Elkader, Rollin has made a host of friends who sympathize with his immediate family in his early death.
