Mrs. Amanda McFall Phelps was born May 13, 1841, at Collsville, Ohio, and passed away at her home six miles northeast of Edgewood on Saturday, July 18, 1931, after an illness of several years.
When she was three years of age her parents moved to Plattville, Wis., where her father worked in the lead mines, later the family came to Colesburg where they found work scarce, this was in the winter time and food was provided by the old flint lock gun. The father, Mr. McFall, killed 17 deer and Mrs. McFall salted and dried a large portion of this for future use.
After the war of 1812, Mr. McFall was given a land grant which he did not use and latter presented this to his daughter, Amanda, who filed on land near Greeley.
She was married early in life to Seneca Phelps and they lived on a farm near Petersburg, soon after this needing a larger portion they bought a farm near Garden Prairie, Fayette county. Here they reared their twelve children and lived for many years until they bought the farm where she passed away.
Mr. Phelps died December 29, 1904. After Mr. Phelps' death Mrs. Phelps continued to supervise the work on the farm and has done so until the last two years when she turned it over to her son Richard.
