Clayton County Register, Thur., 23 July 1931.
George Hampton Brown was born in Mallory township, Clayton county, on Feb. 09, 1848, and died in Monticello, Iowa, on July 18, 1931, at the ripe old age of 83 years, five months and nine days.
He grew to manhood in the Colesburg vicinity, attending the neighborhood school during his boyhood years.
He was married to Scamantha Josephine Wheeler July 17, 1880, in Clayton county, Iowa. To this union two boys were born, Levi Morrison and Freddie Leary, both of whom preceded their father into the great beyond. Mrs. Brown also preceded him about five months ago. Two sisters, Mrs. Mary Young and Mrs. Malinda Moreland, and one brother, John, passed away some years ago.
For about the last 18 years the subject of this sketch made his home in Monticello, Iowa, but since the departure of his life's companion was restless and did not feel satisfied. During the last few days he was working in the harvest fields and apparently the extreme was too much for him, and he succumbed, July 18, at about 5:30 a.m.
He leaves to mourn his departure one brother, Joe W. Brown, of Mallory township, five half-brothers, Charles, Jake, Bruce, James and Frank Brown, all of this neighborhood, three half-sisters, Mrs. Lillian Blaker, Mrs. Ida Knee of this vicinity, and Mrs. Maggie Beddow of Sioux City, Iowa, and one grandchild, George Brown of Kinston, North Carolina, besides a number of other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held and burial made at the Brown cemetery Sunday afternoon with Rev. Nothdurft officiating.
