Clayton County Register, Thur., 25 June 1931.

Jacob Tharp, 69, of North Buena Vista, committed suicide last Friday afternoon by hanging himself in a shed near his house. His lifeless body was found at seven that evening, after he had been dead for four hours.

The shed in which the body was found was located about thirty feet from the house, which is located near the depot in North Buena Vista. In this shed there is an arm built several years ago, apparently for the purpose of dressing hogs. Tharp had attached a rope to this arm, climbed on a chair, fixed the rope and then stepped off.

The dead man was a retired farmer and had been living alone, his wife having made her home with the children. He was a well known resident of Clayton county.

Mr. Tharp was born at North Buena Vista June 08, 1862, and was married to Miss Martha Hounsell, who with three daughters, Mrs. Albert Horsfall and Mrs. Harry Jones of Dubuque, and Mrs. W. F. Wachendorf, North Buena Vista; four sons, John, Waterloo; Emmet and Clarence, Dubuque, and Delbert of North Buena Vista; one sister, Mrs. Charles Whitenbaugh, Cedar Rapids, and a brother, the Rev. Benjamin Tharp, Cassville, Wis., survive him.

Mr. Tharp was a member of the Methodist church.

His act is attributed to ill health.
