Clayton County Register, Thur., 25 June 1931.
Edward Van Talge, 41, a retired farmer, residing just outside of Edgewood, shot his head off in a nearby pasture about four o'clock Saturday morning, his lifeless body being found at five - an hour later.
During the heavy windstorm Friday night both Mr. and Mrs. Van Talge arose, retiring again after the storm. At about four o'clock Van Talge arose again, dressed and went to the barn. Here he procured a blanket and a shotgun and went into a nearby pasture where he shot his head off.
His body was found by Lynn Riezer, the hired man, about five o'clock in the morning while he was taking the cows to the pasture.
Van Talge underwent an operation in February, but apparently had recovered. He is believed to have been mentally deranged.
Besides his widow he is survived by two sons, Donald, two years old, and another eight months old; also his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Van Talge, of Wood, Iowa.
Funeral services for Edward Van Talge were held Monday afternoon in the M.E. church at Wood, the Rev. Mr. Meyer officiating.
