Clayton County Register, Thur., 18 June 1931.
Raymond, the five-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Vogt of Jefferson township, was instantly killed Monday forenoon at about 10:15 on U.S. No. 55, about a half mile east of Ceres, where he was struck by a car driven by Harold Woods of Waukon, International Harvester salesman in this territory.
Raymond and an older brother, LaVerne, had walked up to the main highway to get the morning's mail at the mail box, The boys had taken the mail from mailman Phiffner of Guttenberg, and were starting home. LaVerne started across the paving from behind the Phiffner car, directly in the path of the Woods car. Woods swerved, then found the younger boy following his brother and he swerved still farther, but struck the younger boy with his right front fender and carried him about 100 feet. The boy received two severe gashes on his head, besides other bruises about the body.
An inquest was held and the verdict ruled death by unavoidable accident, and absolved Woods of all blame.
The boy is survived by his father and mother and five brothers and sisters, all of whom have the deepest sympathy of their friends in this accident.
