Clayton County Register, Thur., 18 June 1931.

CLAYTON: Joe Streator, 32, and his son Walter, 5, were drowned here about noon Tuesday while they were trying to escape from a launch which had caught fire.

Earl Beetam, 18, was with Mr. Streator and his son Walter when the launch caught fire in the Mississippi a short distance below here. Fearing that the gasoline supply might explode, the three jumped into the river, the father with his son on his back. The youngster was lost while the father was swimming and it was while trying to save the former that the father went down to his watery grave.

Frankk Gibbs, a fisherman, who was on the river at the same time and saw the fire, rushed to the aid of the unfortunate swimmers and was able to save Beetam, also a fisherman.

The body of the elder Streator was recovered and taken from the water about an hour after the tragedy and Dr. A. E. Beyer of Guttenberg worked over it with a pulmotor but these efforts failed to revive the former.

Six boats were on the river Tuesday afternoon aiding in the search for the body of the boy in about fifteen feet of water near a sand bar but was not located until 7:30 that evening.

Mrs. Streator, one boy and a girl survive the father and son.
