Clayton County Register, Thur., 14 May 1931.
Mrs. G. M. Gifford died at St. Paul Tuesday, May 5th, after an illness of about three weeks. She had been in poor health for some time but her last illness was only of short duration.
Frederica Hartwig Packer was born at Mystic, Conn., April 25th, 1853, and came to Clermont with her parents when a little girl. She was married to Gideon M. Gifford at Beulah, where they lived for a time.
Mr. Gifford at that time was an engineer on the Iowa Eastern, a narrow gauge railroad that ran from Beulah to Elkader. About 48 years ago they moved to Elkader, where they resided until some years ago, when they moved to St. Paul to be near their son and daughter.
Mrs. Gifford is survived by two sons, Elliot J., of St. Paul, and Kit C., of Kennewick, Wash.; one daughter, Mrs. E. R. Smith, St. Paul; one sister, Mrs. Ella Lamm, of Elkader, and three grandchildren.
The remains were brought to Elkader and the funeral was held from the home of her sister, Mrs. Ella Lamm, Friday afternoon, with the Rev. C. T. Brewster delivering the sermon. Mrs. Grace Morse sang a beautiful solo. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery.
Mrs. Gifford was well known here and her many friends extend their sympathy to the family. She was a devoted mother and helpmate and will be greatly missed.
