Clayton County Register, Thur., 29 Jan. 1931.
The subject of this sketch, August W. Meier, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Meir, was born September 18, 1867, near Cedar Falls, Iowa. Later the family moved to Clayton county, Iowa, and settled on a farm near Communia. There, on March 16, 1904, August Meier was married to Miss Minnie Kafer. The farm near Communia was to be the home of the family until December 18, 1929, when they moved to Elkader into the Henry Koehn house, which they had purchased. The reason for leaving the farm was the fact that Mr. Meier was not a well man, not being able to tend to the farm work. His ailment, dating back to the year 1918, gradually developed into "hardening of the arteries," causing him much distress at times. And yet, while living in town, he worked at different jobs, as long as he was able to do so, and he was a faithful and dependable worker. Of late his condition became more serious, a fact that was realized more and more by himself as well as his family. On Sunday, last, he was amongst the worshippers in his church and on Monday he was up and around as usual until late in the afternoon when of a sudden he was stricken. Yet able to bid farewell to his loved ones, and committing his soul into the hands of God and Christ, his Saviour, without a struggle, the heart gradually ceased to beat, and the eyes closed in the last sleep. It was just six o'clock in the evening when life's book was closed having recorded on its pages 63 years, four months and eight days.
The sudden departure of a loving husband and father is mourned by the grief-stricken, faithful wife and companion, Minnie, and the two daughters, Frana and Ena, two children having preceded their father in death in infancy. He also leaves one brother, John Meier, of Fenton, Iowa, and one sister, Mrs. Henry Horstman of Communia, other relatives and many friends. He was a faithful member of the Friedens Evangelical church, where he and his family have been regular attendants in Sunday School and divine services. There he will be missed as well as in the family circle, where henceforth there will be one empty chair. Our sympathy is with the family in their sore bereavement.
Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, C. H. Franke, on Wednesday afternoon, January 28, 1931, in the late home, in the Evangelical church and at the Union Cemetery at Littleport, where the mortal remains were laid to rest.
