Clayton County Register, Thur., 29 Jan. 1931.

GUNDER: Mrs. Anna Johnson was born April 28, 1838, of the parents, Andrew and Keisele Anderson, in Vermland, Sweden, and died at her home in Gunder, Iowa, at 11:15 p.m., Jan. 16th, at the age of 92 years, eight months and 18 days. Her passing away resulted from bronchial pneumonia and old age.

She was baptized and confirmed in Sweden. Her mother died when she was but eleven. (She, with her brothers and sisters, were left orphans when she was fourteen years old. Her father burned to death, when their home burned in mid-winter.)

In October, 1871, she was united in marriage to August Johnson, who preceded her in death 16 years ago. He passed away New Year's day in 1915. Since that time she has lived alone except for winters spent with relatives.

In the fall of 1872, she and her husband came to America. They came to Clayton County, where they spent the rest of their days, except for one year spent in Wisconsin and Minneapolis. They lived at several places before coming to Gunder to reside. She has lived 16 years at the place where she resided at the time of her passing. No children of her own, but her niece, Lena Alsaker, later Mrs. W. T. Wettleson, came from Norway in 1886 and made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Johnson. She was like a daughter in the family. She passed away in 1903.

One sister, Mrs. Marie Lundell, of Skaare, Sweden, who is now 96 years old, is the only one remaining of her immediate family.

She leaves to mourn her departure, besides her only sister, quite a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

The funeral was held Jan. 20th at the Marion Lutheran church, services conducted by her pastor, Rev. Strandjord, of St. Olaf, and interment was made in the Marion church cemetery. Those from a distance attending the funeral were Mrs. Marie Elledge and Mrs. Leo Wasescha of St. Paul.
