Friday afternoon, about six o'clock John Hilmoe, while walking along the railroad track from Clayton to McGregor, was struck by a freight train about two miles and a half south of town, and instantly killed.

Mr. Hilmoe had left his home at Arlington, S. Dak., the day before for a visit at this place with his daughter, Mrs. Jacobs. On reaching here Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the train officials, for some reason or other, carried him on to Clayton. Instead of waiting for the night train north, he started to walk from Clayton to McGregor, a distance of ten miles or thereabouts. He was an old man and it is supposed he became weary as a result of the long journey.

Two and one-half miles south of town a freight train came along. He was on the side of the track next to the river, and at the inquest the engineer said he attempted to cross over on the other side when the train was not far away. The engine struck him, probably instantly killing him. The train crew did not stop to pick him up as it was claimed the passenger was coming not far behind and they could not wait. The section men brought in the body.

Mr. Hilmoe was eighty-one years of age. He was born in Norway in 1834 and resided there until he came to America in 1870. He lived in this vicinity many years and engaged in farming just west of town. Eighteen years ago he went to South Dakota, and took up a claim, where he has since resided, but has been coimg to McGregor occasionally to visit his daughter, Mrs. Jacobs.

Nine children came to bless the home of whom only four are living. Two sons, Ernest and John, are in California.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jacobs, conducted by Rev. Neilson of the M.E. church. The burial was in the cemetery west of town.

Sympathy is extended to the bereaved ones in this sad hour.
