Donald L. Rubendall

Donald L. Rubendall, 85, of Waukon, died Tuesday, February 24, 2004, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Friday, February 27 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Burial with graveside military rites was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Donald Larry Rubendall was born November 30, 1918, near Luana, Iowa, the son of George and Cora Jane (Entwistle) Rubendall. He grew up in Clayton County, attending the rural schools and then working for various area farmers.

From 1941 until 1945 Donald served in the US Army where he was a First Lieutenant and saw action in Germany and at the Battle of the Bulge.

He returned to Iowa where he married Berniece Schultz on July 26, 1945, in Waukon. They ran a general farming operation in Jefferson Township for many years, raising dairy and beef cows, small grains, beef, chickens, and hogs. Donald loved the farming life and worked hard at taking care of his land and livestock. He was awarded the Pioneer Dairyman Award through the DHIA and also served on the board of directors for the Waukon Equity Co-op. He remained on the farm until 2002, when poor health forced him to retire.

Donald was a member of the VFW and several other veterans organizations. In 2003, along with several other World War II veterans, Donald received an Honorary High School Diploma from Waukon High School. He enjoyed visiting with his friends and telling stories and jokes, but his life-long passion remained working on the farm.

Survivors include two sons, Steven L. (Jackie) and Roger (Greta), both of Waukon; a daughter, Janice Jemison of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Berniece who died in 1983; a son-in-law, Larry Jemison; brothers Gordon and Leonard; and sisters Jessie, Azelia, and Florence.

Honorary casketbearers were Lowell Siegele, Ivy Sauer, Jean Wolter, Walter Halvorson, George Decker, Wylo Wagner, and Dennis Meyer. Casketbearers were Steven L., Roger, and Blake G. Rubendall, Janice, Aaron, and Christopher Jemison, and Tom Sauer.
