Elkader Register, Thur., 13 Mar. 1930.
George Eckheart was born Apr. 12, 1848, at Yorktown, Onieda Co., New York, and departed this life, Mar. 07, 1930, at ten o'clock a.m. at the age of 81 years, ten months and 25 days.
When six years of age he moved with his parents to Brush Creek, Iowa. January 10, 1869 he was united in marriage to Katherine Hidinger at Wadena, Iowa. The young couple started housekeeping on a farm east of Arlington, which remained their home for the next 42 years. Five children were born to this union, namely, Frank E., of Muskegon, Mich., George W. and William H. at Arlington, Mrs. Alta Hagensick and Arthur L., of Elkader, all of whom survive their father. After many years of hard work on the farm, when the infirmities of declining years were gradually coming on the aged couple, they decided to leave the farm and moved to Elkader in 1911. Here they were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary in 1919. This was a most enjoyable event for the members of the entire family, all of whom were able to be present to rejoice with the parents, except the youngest son, Arthur, who was still across the Atlantic with the army of occupation. With the infirmities of old age and other complications Mr. Eckheart has been confined to his bed with the exception of a few days since Nov. 10, 1927, at the home of his son, Will. During this time he had the loving care of a son and daughter-in-law as well as other relatives and everything possible was done for his comfort and welfare until the end came and he peacefully went to sleep in the presence of all his children, except Frank, who was unable to be with the family at this time.
His wife preceded him in death Dec. 3, 1925. Besides his children he leaves to mourn his loss eighteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a large number of other relatives and friends.
