Elkader Register, Thur., 02 Dec. 1920. Strawberry Point column.
The remains of Mrs. Sam Gratke, nee Miss Rema Blanchard of Logan, were brought here Thursday morning for burial. Mrs. Gratke was born and raised in this community. After completing her education in the high school she returned to take up the normal course to prepare herself for a teacher. After her marriage to Sam Gratke they resided at Cedar Falls for a while then they went to Dennison where Mr. Gratke taught and this year he was teaching at Beebeetown (Logan). Her death has cast a gloom over the whole community for she was loved by all who came in contact with her and made friends readily. Besides her husband, a baby girl three weeks old, she leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Blanchard, one sister, Mrs. Ed. Uhl and three brothers, Charles, Bert and Juddie, an aged grandmother, Mrs. Lydia Ludy, besides other relatives and friends to mourn the passing of a dear one. The funeral services were held Saturday morning at the home of her parents conducted by Rev. Kirby and was largely attended by her many friends who had been glad to mingle with her in life, for her gentle and amiable disposition won for her the love and esteem of all who knew her and who expressed sincere regrets at her early death. Interment took place in our beautiful cemetery.
