Elkader Register, Thur., 12 Aug. 1920. Strawberry Point column.

The death of Geo. D. Scofield aged 78 years, occurred Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. J. Stamp on Commercial Street. Mr. Scofield had not been well for some time and last winter he and his wife went to live with their daughter. Last Saturday he seemed to feel better than common and was joking with one of the neighbors who were stacking oats and a few minutes later he had a stroke of apoplexy and he lived just a few minutes. He was born in New York State, July 27, 1842. In March 1865 he came to Iowa settling at Strawberry Point, where he has since resided being engaged in farming and later moving to town. Sept. 14, 1867, Mr. Scofield and Miss Jennie Wing quietly slipped away to Elkader and were united by Mr. Alvah Rodgers then the judge of the County Courts. This their friends never forgot for fifty years later some of their friends stole a march on them in coming in and celebrating their golden anniversary. Three children, one son and two daughters, blessed this union, Frank who died several years ago, and Alice, now Mrs. Howard Evans, of Maysville, Missouri, and Belle, Wife of A. J. Stamp, of this place. Uncle George, as everybody called him, was an upright citizen honest in his dealings. During the fifty-three years of married life his devoted companion walked by his side sharing the joys and sorrows of life and was ever ready to bear her share of the burden. Besides his wife and two daughters he leaves seven grandchildren and one brother, Nathan Scofield of Pocahontas and other relatives and friends who mourn his loss. No funeral arrangements have yet been made.
