Elkader Register, Thur., 20 May 1920. Strawberry Point column.
Last Thursday evening at his home about six miles northeast of town occurred the death of Thos. Hines aged 81 years, an old pioneer. Mr. Hines had been in failing health for some time but was given the best of medical care by his children. Several years ago his wife passed away and since that time he has always lived alone and was looked after by his children who live near him. He lived a real pioneer life in that he cleared land and brought crops of grain from natures soil, giving not only force of physical strength but also ambitious spirit the family he was rearing in the midst of a sparsely settled country. Thus another one that has lived long and well has taken the journey of which Jobe spoke when he said: "When a few years (more) are come, when I shall go my way, when I shall not return." There are three daughters and three sons, Mrs. Joe Gordon, Mrs. Will Sauerbry and Mrs. Gus Dillon; Jeff, Roy and Cyrus D. Hines, all of this place, to mourn the father's departure, besides one brother C. S. Hines, of this place, also a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The funeral services were held last Sunday morning at the Christian church conducted by Rev. W. H. Smith. The church was filled with sympathizing friends and relatives who came to pay the last tribute of respect to one who will long be remembered for his self-sacrificing love and willingness to respond to every call where he could serve a friend. Interment took place beside his wife and daughter in the Cox Creek cemetery.
