John Rodas, Sr., son of Johan and Mary Rodas, was born in _echenteen, Mecklenberg-Schweringen, Germany, in March 1833. and died in his home near Littleport on March 24, 1920.
He emigrated to America in 1870, landing in New York and came at once to Iowa, locating near the Plagman families in the vicinity of Buck Creek, where he worked as a woodsman for one year. In 1871-72 he worked at railroading at Littleport when the Volney branch was under construction. Later he purchased a farm where he reared his family and toiled patiently.
Deceased was united in marriage to Miss Lena Moss and to this union six sons were born, two, Chas. and William, preceded their father in death at the ages of 17 and 18 respectively. Those left to mourn his departure are: John, Fred, Henry and August; a sister, Mrs. Dora Schultz, of Arcadia, Wis., two grandsons, Henry, Jr., son of Henry and Lizzie (Bailey) Rodas, and Elmer, son of Fred and Edna (Winch) Rodas, besides three nephews, Chas., William and Henry Plagman.
Mr. Rodas was a life-long member of the Lutheran church and was a true adherent to that faith. Rev. Stolz conducted the funeral services and the remains were laid to rest in the Union cemetery south of Littleport.
John Rodas was a typical grain belt farmer, Honest, straightforward and up right, a noble pioneer, beloved by all who knew him best.
