Elkader Register, Thur., 04 Mar. 1920.
On Friday, February 27th, one of Highland township's prosperous farmers, Lars H. Wikan, was laid to rest. The funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. John Johnson, a sister of the deceased. Interment was made at Marion Lutheran cemetery, Gunder, Iowa, with Rev. H. Hjoitholm officiating.
Lars Wikan was born in Clayton county, Iowa, December 17, 1876. He was baptized by Rev. O. Waldeland and confirmed by Rev. Gjerstad. Mr. Wikan had a very quiet disposition. He was an industrious young man and was respected by all who knew him. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Halvor H. Wikan, both of whom died a number of years ago. After the death of his father, Lars took charge of the home place. A little more than a year ago he began to fail in health and last January he went to the hospital at La Crosse, Wis., where he submitted to an operation which was successful and he was about to return to his home when he was taken with the "flu." He suffered about two weeks and died February 24, 1920 at the age of 43 years. He leaves one brother, Halvor H., of Elkader, and two sisters, Mrs. C. O. Christianson and Mrs. John H. Johnson, of Highland, and many friends who morn his departure from this life. Their comfort is the hope of eternal life.
