Read Pioneer Died Wendesday
Gottfried Stendel was born March 1st, 1844 at Kleinbeuster, Saxony. There he spent his boyhood days and grew to manhood.
On June 22nd, 1873 he was united in marriage to Miss Marie Lucas.
Shortly after their marriage, on July 18th,1873, the young couple set sail for America and settled at Clayton Center, Clayton County, Iowa, and later moved to a farm in Read Township.
Eight children were born to this union, four of which preceded their father to the great beyond; two died in infancy, one girl Minnie, when eleven years of age and one son, Fred Stendel, was killed in action in France in September 1918. This was indeed a great shock to the aged parents, for he was their main support; yet it was a source of comfort for them to know that he had laid down his life as a sacrifice for our country and flag.
For some years Mr. Stendel was afflicted with asthma and of late dropsy set in and in spite of medical treatment and loving care he passed away on Wendesday evening, August 13th, 1919, at the age of 75 years, 5 months and 12 days.
His departure is mourned by his wife Marie, three sons and one daughter viz, Herman of Northwood, Iowa, William and Charles, of Read Township and Mrs Emitie Meyer (Amelia Meyers), of Elkader.
He also leaves five grand-children and many old-time friends and neighbors who mourn his departure. ****ELKADER REGISTER, THURSDAY, AUGUST 21, 1919****
