Register and Argus, 02 Dec. 1915.
Carl Hilgermann, probably obeying an impulse of a mind weakened by his advanced years, hanged himself in an outhouse at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Christian Hildebrandt, at Littleport, yesterday (Wednesday) morning, at 11:30.
Deceased was born in Okelitz, Germany, March 24th, 1827, and was therefore 88 years, 8 months and 5 days old. He learned the blacksmith trade when a youth and also served four years in the German army, from 1847 to 1850, coming to this country a few years later.
July 29th, 1858, he was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Schmitz, at Prairie du Chien, Wis., and they went to live on a farm in Cox Creek township. Later he engaged in his trade of blacksmith at Mederville a few years and then resumed farming until 1902, when he again moved to Mederville. There his wife died April 19th, 1911, and from that time he lived with his children.
He is survived by four daughters - Mrs. Katie Hildebrandt and Mrs. Minnie Brich, of Littleport; Mrs. Ida Meder, of Mederville, and Mrs. C. B. Wilcox, of Brazil, Ind.; also one son, Ed Hilgermann, of Strawberry Point; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral services will be held at Littleport tomorrow (Friday) afternoon, at 2:00 o'clock, and will be conducted by Rev. Franke, of this place. Interment will be in the Littleport cemetery.
