Register and Argus, 02 Sept. 1915.
Johann Frederick Otting was born February 8th, 1847, in Hanover. At the age of seven years he emigrated with his parents to this country and for a short time resided in Cincinnati, Ohio, then came overland by covered wagon to Garnavillo, Iowa. In 1858 his father bought a farm near Clayton, the old homestead where the deceased lived until called to his eternal home.
On May 30th, 1872, he was married to Frederica Buckman, who preceded him in death November 15th, 1911.
This union was blessed with ten children, three of whom died in infancy. The surviving children are: Mrs. Amelia Mohning, Mrs. Georgina Werges, of Clayton township; Herman, Henry, Justina, Odelia and Ada who are at home. He is also mourned by six grandchildren and four sisters.
The deceased was an ideal man in all that the term implies. All duties were sacred to him and he always performed them to the best of his ability. He felt happiest when at home with his family and seldom did he leave them. Neighbors and friends found him sincere in every respect and always enjoyed his presence for reason of his agreeable cheerfulness.
His last month and especially his last days were full of bitter suffering. Since July 25th he had been confined to his bed and in spite of the very best of care by his loving family, his sisters and many friends, he gradually grew worse and passed away on Saturday, August 28 at 7:30 o'clock p.m., having reached the age of 68 years, 6 months and 20 days.
Funeral services were conducted at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church Wednesday afternoon, by Rev. Braun, where sorrowing friends assisted the relatives in the last sad rites, and he was laid to rest in the Garnavillo City cemetery.
