Wm. Ortman died suddenly Friday noon while sitting at the dinner table. He had been sick for several weeks this spring but was presumed to be on a fair way to recover. He was 66 years old at the time of his death and was born in Germany and came to Volga township when young. About ten years ago he retired from his farm and settled in Guttenberg. He is survived by his wife, five sons, Frank, in Elkport; Fred, Ed, Will and Ben; and four daughters, Mrs. Fred Allenstein, of LaMotte; Mrs. Harry Beerman, of Guttenberg; one daughter in St. Paul and Anna at home. Burial took place Monday afternoon in the City cemetery.

Register and Argus, 26 Aug. 1915. Littleport column.
Word received from Guttenberg announced the sudden death there of John [sic] Ortman, a brother of Henry Ortman, who resides here. Heart failure was the immediate cause of his demise, and while his taking away was a surprise, it was not wholly unlooked for, as the gentleman has been a sufferer from a poor heart for the past two or three years. A number of our townspeople and relatives of the deceased attended the funeral last Monday.
