On Monday evening of last week occurred the death of Frederick Edmund Heckel, of Milleville, Iowa. Mr. Heckel was one of the oldest citizens of Milleville, having moved there more than thirty-nine years ago.
He was born in Saxony, Germany, April 19th, 1845. In 1866 he landed at New York and soon after located at Freeport, Ill. From there he moved to Dubuque County and for a few years was engaged in the general store business, at Peosta. In 1876 he purchased the flour mill at Millville, Iowa, and has owned it continuously up to the time of his death. During his long career as a miller, farmer and business man he became widely and favorably known. He was known for his honest dealing and upright living and was loved and respected by all who had the pleasure of his companionship and acquaintanceship.
In his early manhood Mr. Heckel became a member of the German Lutheran church and retained membership in that denomination up to the time of his death.
On November 14th, 1871, he was united in marriage to Miss Charlotte Botsford, who now survives him. Four children were born to this union: Fred E. Heckel, of Bowbells, N.D.; Mrs. H. F. Andregg, of West Bend, Iowa; Mrs. Chas. E. Brown, of Edgeley, N.D., and Mrs. W. H. Scott, of Nashua, Iowa. Eleven grandchildren also survive him.
Mr. Heckel was a good neighbor and a kind friend and his familiar figure will be long remembered by those who knew him best.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the church at Goshen and were attended by a very large assemblage of sorrowing friends. Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church. The family has the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.
