Our community was shocked last Friday afternoon when the news spread that Ranholt Meisner, a prominent farmer living a few miles west of here on the West Union road, had committed suicide.

Mr. Meisner was an industrious, prosperous farmer, with a fine house and a devoted wife and son, apparently having everything to live for. We are told, however, that in spite of his robust appearance he had been failing in health for the past year, having suffered a great deal and gone through two surgical operations. It is probable that it was in a fit of despondency over his sufferings that he shot himself.

Ranholt Meisner was a son of Earnest and Christena Meisner and was born in Elkader, March 8th, 1858. He grew to manhood in this vicinity, attending the Elkader schools for a time. On September 17th, 1891, he was married to Miss Anna Cheeseman of this place.

He is survived by his sorrowing wife, one son, Ransom, three brothers, Louis, Frank and Charles, and other relatives. His parents, one brother and two sisters died some years ago.

The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the home and the Congregational church and were conducted by Rev. C. H. Franke and Rev. Isaac Cassel. A very large number of friends and neighbors were present to show their regard for the departed and their sympathy for the bereaved ones. Interment was in the East Side cemetery.
