Samuel Hurd was born in Nottinghamshire, England, on Jan. 19, 1833, and came to America in the fall of 1869, where he lived with his family in Clayton county, Iowa, until the death of his wife Martha, in 1892. Since then he has made his home with his children. For the past few years he has made his home with his son James, near Lawler, Chickasaw county, Iowa, where he died Jan. 20, 1915, at the ripe old age of 82 years. There were seven children, three of whom preceded him in death, two in infancy, the other at the age of 29 years. There are four living: Edward, of Elkton, S.D.; James, of Lawler, Ia.; Mrs. O. C. Antelman, of Superior, Wis.; Mrs. J. P. Brown, of Clayton, Iowa. There are eighteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The remains arrived at Clayton early Friday morning by train, attended by relatives. The funeral was held Saturday at 1 o'clock at the M.E. church, Rev. Hoffman officiating, and interment was in the Clayton cemetery.
