From the Wed., 26 Jan. 1938 issue of the “Nashua Reporter and Weekly Nashua Post,” page 1, column 6:

George Meyer, 69, Called by Death Last Thursday

Geo. Meyer, 69, was called by death at his home in Greenwood, last Thursday.

Funeral services were held Sunday at St. John’s Lutheran church, Rev. E. H. Engel officiating, and burial was made in Greenwood cemetery.

His obituary, which was read at the funeral follows.

The deceased, George J. Meyer, was born Nov. 12th, 1868 at Garber, Clayton County, Iowa. He was baptized in infancy and later was confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran faith. On Feb. 2, 1894, he was united in wedlock to Hermine Nordmann. This union was blessed with seven children one of whom died in infancy.

Soon after his marriage he moved with his family to Butler County, and for the last 19 years lived in and around this community, during which time he also worshipped the Lord His Saviour in our midst and confessed Him to his dying day. An instance of his anxiety to see the Lord’s work go forward was shown last fall when at considerable cost to his health and strength he spent several days aiding in the redecoration of his church. May the Lord add this to his peace and joy in heaven.

Our departed brother’s life was spared some years ago when he submitted to a critical operation. Since then he had been in comparatively good health until recent months. On Friday before last it became necessary to again take him to the hospital, but this time the Lord willed to take his soul unto Himself. This was late Thursday afternoon, Jan. 20th. Though the Sacrament of our Saviour’s Body and Blood was administered under difficulty there is reason to believe that his faith was strengthened by them in his last hours unto life everlasting.

He reached the age of 69 years, 2 months and 8 days.

He leaves to mourn, his beloved wife, Hermine, six children, Albert of Chicago, Clara Brockhoff, Hinsdale, Ill., Lucy Segebarth of Nashua, Bertha Trenn, Elmhurst, Ill., Esther D’vorak, Black River Falls, Wis., and Norma Segebarth of Waverly, and ten grandchildren.

Surviving are a brother, John of Hammond, Wis., two sisters, Elizabeth of Deep River, Iowa, and Anna, residing in Canada, and two half sisters, Minnie and Bertha, both of Elkport, Iowa.

A brother, a half brother, and a half sister preceded him in death.

All the children were with him during his last illness, and attended the funeral. Other out-of-town relatives here for the funeral were John Meyer, Hammond, Wis.; Mrs. W. F. Schultz, Deep River, Ia.; Mrs. August Lundt and Mrs. August Ortman, Elkport, Ia.; Mrs. Henry Lindenburg [sic: Lindenberg], and son, Lowell, Garver [sic], Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Willard Muters, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Seimering, Sac City, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Busse and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Busse, Waverly; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lundt and daughter, of Chelsia [sic], Ia.”
