From the Thurs., 13 Aug. 1887 issue of the "Elkader Register," Our Local Scrap-Bag section, page 5, column 3:  

DIED--Fred Russow, one of the early settlers of Mendon township, died at his home in West McGregor, on Thursday night of last week.  Deceased was a native of Mecklenberg, Germany, and was 42 years of age.  He came to the United States with his parents some 35 years ago, and for 20 years had been a resident of Mendon township, this county.  He leaves a wife and nine children, the youngest but two months old, to mourn his death.  The funeral occured on Sunday, and was largely attended.
